Fractions

We have been learning about fractions in maths. We are learning that:
  • the number on the bottom of the fraction is called the DENOMINATOR and it tells you how many parts make up the whole.
  • the number on the top is called the NUMERATOR and it tells you how many of the parts you are talking about.
  • some fractions have different names for the same thing - eg one quarter is the same as one fourth. (But a half isn't the same as a tooth!).
  • as the numerator gets bigger the size of the parts gets smaller.
  • we can work out a fraction of a number by doing equal sharing - we try to have a good guess first.
